We welcome people from all walks of life at our services but understand that if you are new to church or just investigating the Christian faith for the first time, it can be a little intimidating. Here are a few thoughts that should make taking that first step a little easier.
For starters, wear whatever you feel comfortable wearing. Some people wear jeans, other people wear suits so, whatever you wear, someone will almost always be more dressed up and less dressed up than you.
Make sure when you come in that you get an order of service which will be available at a table near the entrance to our main worship room. Everything you need to know about the service that morning will be printed in the bulletin. If you have a Bible, please bring that along if you like. However, if you do not have one, there is no need to worry since we usually print scripture readings and sermon texts in our bulletins.
Our service usually lasts about an hour to an hour and 15 minutes. We sing songs, visit with one another, pray, and listen to a sermon based on the Bible. On the first Sunday of every month we have the Lord's Supper (also called "Communion" or "Eucharist" in other settings). This is offered openly to all who can genuinely say that they understand that they are a sinner and in need of God's mercy and grace through Jesus to make them right with God. If a person does not understand these things or has not yet committed his/her life to Christ, then that person should simply let the bread and wine pass as they are distributed. But don't let this stop you from coming! You are definitely in the right place. Every time we have the Lord's Supper there are people who do not take it so you won't "stick out" or be singled in any way for not doing so. We only explain these thing so that people will understand how important it is to us, and so that they will not feel pressured to participate in these things before they should, and before they really understand the significance of them.
After the service is over people usually stick around for a while before heading off to lunch. So, don't be in a rush to leave but please grab a cup of coffee and take the opportunity to get to know some of the other people in the church. We believe very strongly in what we call the "horizontal" part of our worship service - which just means we believe that the church is about people, not buildings, and take seriously the privilege we have of loving and serving one another. We hope that when you come you will feel welcomed as a special guest.
Finally, please know that children of all ages are welcome. We have a nursery with professional staff available to help out with the little ones if you would prefer to not have them with you in the service. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to contact one of our pastors, Scott Lindsay, Andrew Voelkel or Woody Markert at info@sbrpres.org.
